On April 11 - 13, 2008, 8th - 12th graders from JRF congregations across North America will have the opportunity to attend the exciting No’ar Hadash North American Teen Kallah. No’ar Hadash has grown exponentially over the past years - this year, alone, we have had hundreds of teens participate in our fabulous regional programming in the Midwest, Eastern, Western, and Pacific Northwest regions. It is now the time of year to begin looking forward to, and registering for, our gathering of Reconstructionist teens from across the continent.

A wonderful group of teen va’ad(leadership council) members are hard at work developing an amazing retreat weekend. This is a great opportunity for teens to meet other Reconstructionist youth, have fun, take part in experiential Jewish learning, sing and dance, hang out, and be part of our exciting growing youth movement. And, they can do all of this while exploring historic Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The cost of the weekend is only $180, plus travel, for registration forms that are postmarked by March 26, 2008. Included in this amount are:

Accommodations at the Courtyard Philadelphia Airport hotel
Meals (Friday dinner through Sunday breakfast)
Transportation between Philadelphia Airport / 30th Street Station and the event
All program and entry fees
A T-shirt

This is Alanna Sklover, your No’ar Hadash regional intern, and I am super-excited to say that it’s that time of year again… Ok, besides the World Series—It’s time to sign-up for the 2007 No’ar Hadash Eastern Teen Kallah! This year, we’ll be meeting up at Capital Camps in scenic Waynesboro, PA with Reconstructionist Teens from across Virginia, DC, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York for a weekend full of laughing, praying, singing, learning, hanging out, and so much more! A Note from Israel

No'ar Hadash in Israel 2007As I write, I am sitting in Ben Gurion Airport awaiting my flight back to the United States; I have spent the past few days with the 35 teens on the No'ar Hadash Israel Experience. First, let me say that they are all happy, smiling, and well cared for. In this last regard, IsraelExperts (our tour operator) has been spectacular at looking after every detail, and Roni and Derek (our American staff) continue to be among the most caring, thoughtful, and energetic leaders you can imagine. The group is truly lucky to have such a team planning and implementing this program.

During my all-too-short visit, I have had the opportunity to visit museums, watch movies, walk through beautiful towns, and just hang out with the teens. Group favorites from the past few days have included a home-cooked lunch in the Druze village of Osefya; meeting Murray Greenfield, an American who came to Israel before the creation of the State in order to help smuggle displaced Jews into the country (as he told us, he was "this close" to being a crew member on the Exodus); and a "scavenger hunt" through the Diaspora Museum in Tel Aviv. Perhaps the most exciting experience from the past few days was the morning we spent at Gadna. learning first-hand what it means to be a new recruit in the Israeli Defense Forces. The teens dressed in uniform, took part in field exercises, ate army "rations," and explored their personal responses to the army and its role in Israeli life. This powerful experience, along with so many others, is what this trip is all about; we are here to give our teens opportunities to challenge themselves to think in ever expanding ways about the place of Israel in their lives, in the life of the Jewish community, and ultimately in the world within which we live. As they enter their third week in Israel, they are doing this in ways that continue to amaze and please us more than we could ever have expected.

When I first met up with the group on Sunday night, we sat outside of our hotel in Haifa and discussed some of the highlights of the trip. I heard of visits to the Kotel (Western Wall), walking through the ancient water tunnel built by Hezekiah, learning about the pioneers of Israel from a phenomenal speaker, swimming in the Kineret, and the fun of a night in a Bedouin Tent before climbing Massada to the sounds of a live David Broza concert. The higlight that stood out most, however, came from one participant in particular. She explained that as she began walking towards the Kotel, a woman asked her where she is from. She told the woman that she is from the United States and that she is here with a group from No'ar Hadash, the Reconstructionist youth movement. The woman's response was simple: "Welcome home." This clearly touched the teen and her peers - everyone shook their heads in understanding as she told the story.

For our teens, the past two weeks have been a homecoming. (Worry not - they will still come home to your communities at the end of next week!) Know that, without a doubt, they will come home changed people. The experiences they are having here in Israel are truly life-changing and the way in which they are responding is truly holy. It is a deep pleasure to have had the opportunity to spend time with them over the past few days and I look forward to finding the ways in which they bring their new home with them when they return to the United States next week.

Through our time with these teens, we are all able to come home a bit to our country - and to ourselves. For both of these, we are most grateful.

Shabbat Shalom from Israel: The No'ar Hadash Israel Experience Writes Home

No'ar Hadash Teens in JerusalemThis summer, JRF sent 35 teens to Israel for the first month-long No'ar Hadash Israel Experience. Following is a note received from the group before their first Shabbat:

Shabbat shalom from Israel. After a very long flight, the No’ar Hadah Israel Experience teens were happy to meet their Israeli staff in Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. We immediately hit the ground running, with a tour of Neot Kedumim, a biblical garden which has been reconstructed, in order to learn what it was like to live on the land in the Biblical period. Here we listened, looked, tasted, touched, and smelled the Biblical period, including crushing our own zatar, making oil lamps, and learning how olive oil and wine were made.

Thursday, we began our day with an archaeological dig in the area of Bet Guvrin, which is from the Hellenistic period. The staff at Bet Guvrin said this was one of the most eventful days of digging they had seen in a long time; Rachel K. found an austercome, a pottery shard with Aramaic script—an extremely rare find. The student who helped us through the dig is the grandson of Rabbi Jack Cohen, one of the founders of Reconstructionism. The head archaeologist, a man named Bernie, told us that as Reconstructionists we are going to save Israel.

Participating in the No'ar Hadash Israel ExperienceToday, we started off walking on top of the walls of the Old City, getting a birds-eye view of Jerusalem. Then we went down below the walls and walked through the tunnels, singing songs of Jerusalem as we walked through water that flowed from a cistern built more than two millennia ago. This afternoon we went shopping in the shuk at Mahaneh Yehudah and the prepared for Shabbat services at Kol Haneshamah synagogue. Every day since we have been here, someone has said that “this is the coolest day of my life.” We’re looking forward to many more days like this as we continue to explore the neshama—the soul—of Jerusalem and Israel.
